At the end of World War I, the Ottoman Empire collapsed and much of Southwest Asia, including modern-day Turkey, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and Palestine, became a part of the mandate system. The mandate system was created by the League of Nations, which was the precursor to the United Nations, and it was designed to administer territories that were formerly controlled by the defeated empires. The mandates were controlled by various European powers, such as Britain and France, who governed these territories on behalf of the League of Nations. The consequences of the mandate system in Southwest Asia were the establishment of new borders and political structures, the imposition of European control and influence, and the eventual destabilization and conflicts that emerged in the region.
