The westward expansion of U.S. settlers into Mexican territories, including Texas, caused tensions and conflict with the Mexican government. The Mexican government introduced several measures to control the Anglo-American settlers, including restrictions on immigration and taxation policies. These measures led to dissatisfaction among the American settlers, who desired more autonomy and the ability to practice their own religion and own slaves. This ultimately led to the Texas Revolution in 1835 and 1836, during which Texan forces fought and gained independence from Mexico. The events that led to Texas receiving independence include the Battle of Gonzales, the Battle of the Alamo, the Goliad Massacre, the Battle of San Jacinto, and the signing of the Treaty of Velasco.
