Chapter 1

By Art Coulson
“Wow!” Harley said as we poured out of my grandparents’ car and got our first look at their new cabin. It was huge, all wood and windows, with a covered front porch.

For once, I didn’t argue with my brother. Wow is right, I thought.

In my thirteen years I had never seen a more beautiful lake house. And that was the best part—the lake. You could barely see all the way across. For the next two weeks, I’d be able to swim and fish right from the backyard.

This was definitely nicer than our apartment in Tulsa. But to be honest, at first I hadn’t been excited about spending two weeks in the woods of Wisconsin. I’d wanted to spend the summer at home with my friends.

But then my parents had mentioned Grandma and Grandpa’s boat. They wanted to take us fishing on the lake every day. I’d only been fishing a few times, but a boat sounded fun. Even if my baby brother had to tag along.

Although we’re technically twins, Harley was born twenty whole minutes after me. It was the next day, just after midnight, so we don’t even share a birthday. Most people can’t even tell we’re twins. For one thing, I’m a girl. And for another, we’re nothing alike. Mom says it’s like we came from different parents or something. More like different species.

“Like it?” Grandma asked. “It’s your home away from home for the next two weeks, so let’s get you settled in. There will be plenty of time to fish after supper.”

Uncle Clayton, Mom’s big brother, stepped out of the garage door and threw his arms open wide. Harley and I ran to him and gave him a big hug.
