The layer of the Earth's atmosphere between the stratosphere and the thermosphere is called the mesosphere. It is located approximately 30 to 50 miles above the Earth's surface. The mesosphere is characterized by temperatures that decrease with altitude, reaching extremely cold temperatures as low as -130°C (-200°F). This layer is also known for its protective role, as it absorbs most of the meteoroids that enter the Earth's atmosphere, causing them to burn up before reaching the surface.
