Some fashion designers come up with designs for everything while others specialize in smaller areas. In either case, they need formal training from fashion design schools to practice professionally. Part of the training is learning to create sketch designs. The first concept, say of a new dress, starts as a sketch. Today, more and more fashion designers use computers to help create design. The computer aided designs are easier to readjust for changes and they save time, if used on a mass scale.
