A genetic mutation that changes the way a sequence of DNA is read is called a frameshift mutation. In a frameshift mutation, the addition or deletion of nucleotides in the DNA sequence alters the reading frame during protein synthesis. This results in a different sequence of codons being read, which often leads to a completely different amino acid sequence and potentially a nonfunctional protein.
