The Roman Empire, under Emperor Constantine the Great, established Constantinople as its new capital in 330 AD. The city was originally known as Byzantium but was renamed Constantinople after Constantine. The Byzantine Empire later emerged as the eastern division of the Roman Empire, with Constantinople as its capital.
