In 3 to 5 sentences explain the role of the digestive system in animals as well as how the system works

The digestive system in animals is responsible for the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food into usable molecules for energy, growth, and repair. It starts with digestion, where food is mechanically and chemically broken down in the mouth and stomach. Then, the absorbed nutrients pass through the small intestine where absorption occurs, and any undigested material continues into the large intestine where water is absorbed leading to the formation of feces, which are then eliminated from the body through the rectum and anus.
