Today you will be completing your Science Sample Work assessment and studying for your unit test which you will take tomorrow.

For your Sample Work assignment, you will write a reflection about your learning this unit. Your reflections should be 3-5 sentences long and you need to use the sentence starts given on page 1 of this lesson.

Sentence starters:

I am confident that I can describe three basic life processes carried out by plants, including how these processes depend on each other.
I know structures of plants, and how they function to promote survival, defense and reproduction.
I am confident that I can describe a variety of ways that plants respond to external stimuli, and how these responses relate to life processes.
Using the sentence starters are key to earning a top score!

I am confident that I can describe three basic life processes carried out by plants, including how these processes depend on each other. Throughout this unit, I have learned that plants carry out photosynthesis to convert sunlight into energy, respiration to release that energy, and transpiration to transport water and nutrients. These processes are interdependent, as photosynthesis provides the energy for respiration, and transpiration helps to transport the necessary materials for photosynthesis and respiration.

I know structures of plants, and how they function to promote survival, defense, and reproduction. Through my studies, I have come to understand the importance of roots for anchoring plants in the ground and absorbing water and nutrients. Leaves play a crucial role in photosynthesis and the exchange of gases. Flowers are reproductive structures, attracting pollinators and enabling the production of seeds and fruit. Understanding these structures has given me insight into the strategies plants employ to ensure their survival and reproductive success.

I am confident that I can describe a variety of ways that plants respond to external stimuli, and how these responses relate to life processes. In this unit, I have explored how plants respond to stimuli such as light, gravity, touch, and hormones. For example, they grow towards light through phototropism and in response to gravity through gravitropism. These responses are essential for plants to optimize their ability to carry out photosynthesis and acquire vital resources for survival. Understanding how plants respond to their environment has deepened my appreciation for their resilience and adaptability.
