Prior to working at a Vita/TCE site, ALL VITA/TCE volunteers (greeters

and preparers) are required to complete the Volunteer Standards of Conduct (VSC) training. The VSC training is designed to ensure that all volunteers understand the ethical and professional standards expected of them while working as a VITA/TCE volunteer.

The training covers several key topics, including the following:

1. Confidentiality: Volunteers learn about the importance of maintaining taxpayer confidentiality and the guidelines they must follow to protect taxpayer information. They understand that any unauthorized disclosure of taxpayer information can result in legal penalties.

2. Conflict of Interest: Volunteers are educated about the potential conflicts of interest that may arise while providing VITA/TCE services. They learn about the importance of avoiding any activities or actions that may compromise the integrity of the program or create a conflict of interest.

3. Ethical Standards: The training emphasizes the importance of maintaining high ethical standards while working as a VITA/TCE volunteer. Volunteers learn about the key ethical principles that guide their conduct, such as honesty, integrity, and professionalism.

4. Professionalism: Volunteers are taught about the professional behavior expected from them while interacting with taxpayers and other volunteers. This includes treating all individuals with respect, maintaining the confidentiality of taxpayer information, and providing accurate and appropriate tax assistance.

5. Compliance with Tax Laws: Volunteers learn about their responsibilities in ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations. They understand that they are not tax professionals and must adhere to certain limitations in terms of the tax assistance they provide.

Overall, the VSC training provides volunteers with the necessary knowledge and guidelines to perform their duties in a responsible, ethical, and professional manner. This training helps ensure that taxpayers receive accurate assistance and that their confidential information remains protected.
