The first permanent white settlers in Oregon were missionaries who arrived in the early 1830s. They were led by Jason Lee, who established a mission at present-day Salem in 1834. Other prominent missionaries and settlers included Marcus Whitman and his wife Narcissa, who established a mission near present-day Walla Walla, Washington in 1836.
