The function of the ovule is to produce and house the female reproductive cells in plants, known as the egg cells or female gametes. Ovules are found in the ovary of a flower and are the site of fertilization. Once fertilized, the ovule develops into a seed. In this way, ovules play a critical role in plant reproduction and the formation of new plants.
