The Mexica people, also known as the Aztecs, followed their patron deity Huitzilopochtli to Lake Texcoco. According to Aztec mythology, Huitzilopochtli instructed the Mexica to settle in the region where they discovered an eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its beak, which they interpreted as a sign from their god. This led them to establish their capital city, Tenochtitlán, on an island in Lake Texcoco.
