The venules and capillaries are responsible for collecting deoxygenated blood from the tissues after gas exchange has occurred. During gas exchange, oxygen is taken up by the tissues and carbon dioxide is released into the bloodstream. The oxygenated blood then travels back to the heart through the venules and capillaries to be pumped to the lungs for oxygenation again.
