Most asteroids are made up of rock and metal. They are remnants from the early formation of our solar system, often referred to as "building blocks" or "leftovers" from the formation of planets. The majority of asteroids are composed of various silicate rocks, such as basalt, olivine, and pyroxene. Some asteroids also contain significant amounts of metals like nickel, iron, and even precious metals like platinum. Additionally, there are carbon-rich asteroids known as carbonaceous asteroids, which contain higher amounts of organic compounds and water.
