In 1964, American astronomers Robert Wilson and Arno Penzias discovered cosmic microwave background radiation with their radio telescopes. This discovery provided strong evidence for the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe. The cosmic microwave background radiation is residual radiation left over from the early stages of the universe, and its discovery supported the idea that the universe began with a big explosion known as the Big Bang.
