Marquis de Lafayette, born as Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, was a French aristocrat and military officer. He was born in Chavaniac, France on September 6, 1757, and died on May 20, 1834. Lafayette played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War, primarily serving as a major general in the Continental Army. He was a close ally of George Washington and played a crucial role in securing French support for the American cause. After the revolution, Lafayette continued to advocate for liberal causes and played a role in the French Revolution as well. He remains a prominent figure in both American and French history.
