Can someone please help guide me with this one? I am not good at word problems I think I may be dislexic because sometimes I may add or misread a number incorrectly...
Statistics. Beach Channel High School's football team scored one field goal (3pts) and gave up a touchdown (7pts) in the first quarter. In the third quarter, they scored another field goal and gave up a safety (2pts) They gave up a final field goal in the 4th quarter. By how much did they lose?
I got 3 -7 + 2 - 2 - 2 =
Is this correct or how would I begin to solve this question??
see other post.
I did the problem this way.
Beach scored 3 + 3 = 6
The opponents scorred 7 + 2 + 4 = 13
13 - 6 = ?
3    7
3    2
    3
So they made 6 points and the other team made 12 points if I counted right. So they lost by 6 points.
thank you ms.sue that was a much simpler way to do it... I misread it or I am really dislexic because I tend to switch my numbers around...
The only problem with my answer is that I have a typo. The other team only had 12 points. The last field goal was 3, not 4 points.
To solve this word problem, you need to add and subtract the points scored and given up by the team. Let's break it down step by step:
First, let's calculate the points scored by the team. In the first quarter, they scored a field goal worth 3 points. In the third quarter, they scored another field goal worth 3 points. In the fourth quarter, they scored a final field goal, so that's an additional 3 points.
To find the total points scored, add up these values: 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 points.
Next, let's calculate the points given up by the team. In the first quarter, they gave up a touchdown worth 7 points. In the third quarter, they gave up a safety worth 2 points. They didn't give up any points in the fourth quarter.
To find the total points given up, add up these values: 7 + 2 = 9 points.
Now, to determine how much they lost by, you subtract the points scored from the points given up.
9 (points given up) - 9 (points scored) = 0
Therefore, the answer is that they lost by 0 points.
