As this photo shows, slash-and-burn agriculture and logging have cleared out parts of Borneo's rainforest.

With traditional slash-and-burn agriculture, the cleared area is farmed for a while and then it is left fallow for ten years.

During this time, the forest starts to grow back. This approach created few greenhouse gases.

What are the potential consequences of Slash and Burn Farming?
Select two correct answers.

Burning the land provides rich soil for farmers.

Deforestation

Farmers lose valuable crops

Depletion of the soil nutrients

The land will never be able to grow anything again.

- Deforestation: Slash-and-burn agriculture involves the clearing of large areas of forest, leading to deforestation and the loss of biodiversity.

- Depletion of the soil nutrients: Repeated burning and cultivation can deplete the soil of nutrients, making it less fertile and reducing its ability to support future agricultural activities.
