The Non-Intercourse Act was passed by the United States Congress in 1809 and was aimed at reopening trade with foreign nations, except for Britain and France. Its purpose was to improve economic relations and protect American interests during the Napoleonic Wars. By prohibiting trade with the two major European powers, the Act sought to show them the economic consequences of their aggressive actions towards American shipping and impressment of American sailors.
