The Aztec created more farmland for the city of Tenochtitlan by using chinampas. Chinampas were artificial islands formed by layering mud and vegetation, which were then anchored to the lakebed with poles. They created a system of raised agricultural fields that were used to grow crops. The Aztec used the nutrient-rich soil from the lake bottom to cultivate a variety of crops, including maize, beans, squash, and chili peppers. This innovative farming technique allowed the Aztec to maximize their agricultural output and support the growing population of Tenochtitlan.
