Looking back on human history, I shudder to think how our ancestors survived without the basic implements and technologies we depend on today. I'm speaking, of course, about computers, television, and the Internet, without which one wonders how life could go on. The possibility, for instance, of handwriting a thoughtful letter instead of sending a quick e-mail is too cumbersome to bear. And instead of watching television or surfing the Internet, imagine having to attend a play or—dare I say it—read a book.
