Consider the plight of animals inhabiting a tide pool. During high tide, the pool floods with advancing waters and threatens to wash the animals away. Next comes a low tide, in which the waters recede and expose many of the inhabitants. Without the protection of the water, they must survive hours of intense sunlight. When that danger passes, the animals face another flooding during the next high tide.
