Gene expression is the process by which information contained in DNA is used to create functional proteins. It begins with DNA being transcribed into messenger RNA (mRNA) by RNA polymerase. Next, the mRNA molecule travels from the nucleus to the cytoplasm where it is translated into a sequence of amino acids, facilitated by ribosomes. Finally, these amino acids are joined together to form proteins, which carry out various functions in the cell.
