Trench warfare was the practice of

fighting from fortified trenches, which were long, narrow ditches dug into the ground. Soldiers would occupy these trenches and engage in combat with the enemy. The trenches were usually separated by a No Man's Land, a barren and dangerous area between opposing lines. Trench warfare was characterized by its static nature, as neither side could make significant advances due to the heavily fortified defenses. This type of warfare was widely used during World War I and led to intense and prolonged battles with high casualties.
