Zethu lives in Gopane village near Zeerust, North West. He lives with his maternal grandparents and two siblings, Kabo and Leungo. Leungo?s parents (Susan and Piet Phukwi) passed away in June 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The family did not get a chance to perform the cultural rituals due to the restrictions that were put in place by the government. As Africans, conducting the cultural rituals following the death of loved ones is significant because it helps the family to express emotions, adjust their own functioning in the face of death, and alleviate the intensity of grief among others. The rituals also provide an opportunity to collectively remember and acknowledge the deceased person. The family has been struggling to get to terms with the loss of Susan and Piet. To be specific, the grandmother suffered a stroke, and she is on chronic medication, the grandfather barely communicates and interacts with other family members. Zethu now abuses alcohol and he recently got suspended from work due to his drinking problem. Kabo is involved in gangsterism. He stabbed his friend in March 2022 and was sentenced for assault. Leungo is struggling at school, and he has requested his grandparents to go to initiation school in 2024 but they are refusing to allow him to go because they believe that it is not safe.
