Humans have long been interested in robots. Artist Leonardo da Vinci actually sketched the first human-like robot in 1495. He imagined it being controlled by a system of cables and pulleys. However, the word “robot” wasn’t used until 1920. This was when writer Karel Capek used it to describe a human-like machine in one of his plays. The play told the story of a society in which people fall under control of their robots. Stories like that are now a dime a dozen!

Now robots are actually used in everyday life! This is called artificial intelligence. Industrial robots are used in factories to make products quickly. Some robots are even sent to places too dangerous for humans. They venture to other planets or the top of volcanoes. Police and military forces use robots to check for landmines and bombs. Robots work like guards to identify threats and keep humans safe.
