There are variety of ways to measure earthquakes match the descriptions to the two scales of measurements

1. Moment Magnitude Scale (Mw) - Measures the total energy released by an earthquake. It is based on the seismic moment, which considers the area of the fault that slipped, the average amount of slip along the fault, and the rigidity of the rocks involved.

2. Richter Scale (Ml) - Measures the amplitude of seismic waves recorded by seismographs. It is calculated using a logarithmic scale, with each whole number increase representing a tenfold increase in amplitude and approximately 31.6 times more energy release.

Note: It's important to mention that the Richter Scale is less commonly used nowadays, and the Moment Magnitude Scale is generally preferred for measuring large earthquakes.
