The word 'Compassion' points its origins to the latin meaning of “suffering with someone”. However, it conveys a different meaning to different individuals. Some of them stop with expressing their feeling of sadness while others part with sparing some coins as alms and a few others put themselves in the shoes of the sufferer and live through their hard times by supporting and providing for them. In the book, 'Shattered' written by Eric Walter, Mac, a hero in real life, devoted his life helping homeless people, making warm food every single day, checking on their wellbeing every night and giving them the support they needed. This is a promise that Mac made to himself and kept up to it even in the times it inflicted lots of pain and suffering. The scenes of homeless suffering left him with a strong feeling of making their lives better.

Research shows that compassion grows as you spend more time with people you care for. In other words, the more time you take care the more you feel attached and this further creates more compassion. For example, the more time Mac spent with the homeless, the more he wanted to do for them and eventually was connected to a lot more homeless people.

One of the most wanted resources are volunteers and attracting individuals for volunteering opportunities has always been an ongoing challenge. Most young individuals agree to volunteer only as a part of their academic program completion. Further in the book, it is mentioned how Ian has to volunteer in any kind of social activity for passing his Civics program.
If Ian develops empathy after spending time with the homeless, it would establish the effectiveness of the volunteering route to course completion in developing better human beings thus creating a better world.Mac started as one but would soon become a dozen.

If Ian was paying attention to his volunteering pamphlet would he have still picked the class? Would he have continued going to the class if he was a passing student in civics class or if his dad did not care about ians marks and gave him a car anyway?

What would have happened if Ian didn't have berta? Would he have been in depression because of not having a stay at home parent? would he not be afraid of standing between homeless and drunk guys? Could Ian be an altime helper to Mac?
