Are Video Games a Sport?%0D%0AVideo game competitions have professional teams, star players, and millions of fans. Is it time to call gaming a sport?%0D%0A%0D%0ABy Anna Starecheski%0D%0A%0D%0AFrom the December 2020 / January 2021 Issue Scholastic Scope%0D%0A%0D%0AFans line up outside the stadium for hours. They wear T- shirts celebrating their favorite teams and players. Once inside, excitement builds as thousands of people wait for the competition to begin. Fans snap selfies and reporters get ready to film the action. When the players come out, the crowd goes wild. %0D%0A%0D%0AWhat is this game? It isn’t the Super Bowl. Nor is it the World Series or the NBA Finals. In fact, the players aren’t on a field or a court. They’re sitting at computers, tapping away %0D%0A%0D%0Aat keyboards.%0D%0A%0D%0AWelcome to the League of Legends World Championship—one of the biggest video game competitions in the world. %0D%0A%0D%0A %0D%0A%0D%0ASerious Skills%0D%0AVideo game competitions are known as e-sports, or electronic sports. In recent years, e-sports have become increasingly popular. Nearly 100 million people tuned in to watch the 2019 League of Legends World Championship. That’s more than three times the population of Texas!%0D%0A%0D%0AAs the field of e-sports grows, a debate has emerged about whether or not gaming is, in fact, a sport. Typically a sport is defined as a physical activity that requires skill and is played by an individual or a team. %0D%0A%0D%0AThink of the stamina (1) needed to run continuously during a soccer game, the coordination it takes to sink a layup, the strength and balance involved in a gymnast's bar routine. %0D%0A%0D%0AThe skills required to play video games competitively aren’t so different. Gaming takes laser focus and the ability to stay calm under pressure. %0D%0A%0D%0AIt also requires consistent practice to train fingers to move with precision (2) and speed. And given that some competitions can last for hours, gamers certainly need stamina. %0D%0A%0D%0ASome schools already call playing video games a sport. More than 100 colleges in the United States have e-sports teams. At Roosevelt University in Illinois, the e-sport team is part of the athletics department. %0D%0A%0D%0AThe players attend practice four days a week and can get scholarships for being on the team, just like other college athletes. %0D%0A%0D%0AOrganizers for the Olympics are even considering adding e-sports in the near future. %0D%0A%0D%0A %0D%0A%0D%0ACan an activity that’s done primarily from a chair %0D%0Areally count as a sport?%0D%0ASitting Isn’t a Sport%0D%0AThere's no question that e-sports have a lot in common with traditional sports. But can an activity that's done primarily from a chair really count as a sport? Playing NBA 2K20 will simply never get your heart pumping and your muscles working like a sprint around the track. %0D%0A%0D%0ASome argue that classifying gaming as a sport could even have a detrimental (3) effect on kids. Gaming is pretty sedentary (4), and if kids start trading tennis rackets for consoles, they might not get as much exercise—which could be a problem. Physical activity helps lower anxiety and stress and supports overall health. %0D%0A%0D%0AHere’s something else to think about: %0D%0A%0D%0AE-sports may have millions of fans and involve fierce competition, but so do MasterChef Junior and The Voice. Would you call those sports?%0D%0A%0D%0A How about science fairs, chess tournaments, and debate clubs? Those are all wonderful activities, but no one considers them sports.%0D%0A%0D%0AWhat is clear is that e-sports are here to stay, and they’ll be just as fun no matter how we label them!%0D%0A%0D%0AVocabulary%0D%0A1. stamina (STAM-uh-nuh) noun - Stamina is the physical or mental strength to keep doing something for a long time - the ability to work hard without getting too tired.%0D%0A%0D%0A2. precision (pri-SIZH-uhn) noun - means "very accurate or exact."%0D%0A%0D%0A3. detrimental (deh-truh-MEN-tahl) adjective - Something that is detrimental is harmful or causes damage or injury. %0D%0A%0D%0A4. sedentary (SED-n-ter-ee) adjective - Sedentary means "involving a lot of sitting: inactive."%0D%0A%0D%0AQuestion 1%0D%0A %0D%0A%0D%0AThe main purpose of this article is to%0D%0A%0D%0A(1 point)%0D%0AResponses%0D%0A%0D%0Aconvince the reader that video games are a sport. %0D%0Aconvince the reader that video games are a sport. %0D%0A%0D%0Aconvince the reader that video games are not a sport. %0D%0Aconvince the reader that video games are not a sport. %0D%0A%0D%0Ainform the reader of different points of view in the debate over whether video games are a sport.%0D%0Ainform the reader of different points of view in the debate over whether video games are a sport.%0D%0A%0D%0Aencourage readers to exercise.%0D%0Aencourage readers to exercise.%0D%0AQuestion 2%0D%0AThe author writes, “E-sports may have millions of fans and involve fierce competition, but so do MasterChef Junior and The Voice.” The author includes this sentence to(1 point)%0D%0AResponses%0D%0A%0D%0Asupport the idea that some TV shows are sports. %0D%0Asupport the idea that some TV shows are sports. %0D%0A%0D%0Apresent an argument against calling video games a sport. %0D%0Apresent an argument against calling video games a sport. %0D%0A%0D%0Ashow that e-sports are not as popular as certain TV shows. %0D%0Ashow that e-sports are not as popular as certain TV shows. %0D%0A%0D%0Asuggest TV shows that readers might enjoy.%0D%0Asuggest TV shows that readers might enjoy.%0D%0AQuestion 3%0D%0AAccording to the article, what are TWO things that traditional sports and video games have in common?(2 points)%0D%0AResponses%0D%0A%0D%0AThey require stamina.%0D%0AThey require stamina.%0D%0A%0D%0AThey require special skills.%0D%0AThey require special skills.%0D%0A%0D%0AThey require strength and balance.%0D%0AThey require strength and balance.%0D%0A%0D%0AThey are a sedentary activity.%0D%0AThey are a sedentary activity.%0D%0AQuestion 4%0D%0AConsider the last line of the article:%0D%0A%0D%0A“What is clear is that e-sports are here to stay, and they’ll be just as fun no matter how we label them!”%0D%0A%0D%0AWhich best describes the author’s tone in this sentence? %0D%0A%0D%0A(1 point)%0D%0AResponses%0D%0A%0D%0AShe is neutral on the question of whether we should call video games a sport.%0D%0AShe is neutral on the question of whether we should call video games a sport.%0D%0A%0D%0AShe disapproves of calling video games a sport.%0D%0AShe disapproves of calling video games a sport.%0D%0A%0D%0AShe sounds confused about why people care if video games are called a sport.%0D%0AShe sounds confused about why people care if video games are called a sport.%0D%0A%0D%0AShe supports calling video games a sport.%0D%0AShe supports calling video games a sport.%0D%0AQuestion 5%0D%0AThe information in the introduction to “Are Video Games a Sport?” by Anna Starecheski supports the argument that video games are indeed sports.(1 point)%0D%0AResponses%0D%0A%0D%0ATrue%0D%0ATrue%0D%0A%0D%0AFalse%0D%0AFalse%0D%0AQuestion 6%0D%0ADirections: Fill in the blank with the word that best completes each sentence.
