During meiosis, a diploid cell divides twice to produce four haploid cells. The first division is called meiosis I, where a diploid cell splits into two haploid cells. The second division, meiosis II, then divides these two haploid cells again, resulting in a total of four haploid cells. Therefore, during meiosis, a single cell produces four cells.
