Both nonmetals and metals can gain electrons and become ions. Metalloids can also gain electrons and become ions, but this is less common and usually only occurs under specific conditions. Isotopes, on the other hand, are different forms of an element with different numbers of neutrons, and gaining or losing electrons does not change their identity as isotopes.
