The Corner Table

Based on a story by The Brothers Grimm
Mary was a sweet, elderly woman who lost her husband and was left all alone.
Needing support, she moved in with her son, his wife, and their young daughter, Emily. As the days
passed, the old woman's eyesight worsened, and her hearing declined. Mary's hands trembled
during meals, causing peas to roll off her spoon or tea to spill from her mug.
The son and his wife became increasingly annoyed by the mess Mary made at the
dinner table. One day, after she accidentally knocked over a glass of juice, they decided that
enough was enough.
In order to keep the dining room tidy, they placed a towel under a small tray table in
the corner of the room, near the kitchen door. They told Mary she would have eat her meals there,
unless she could stop spilling her food. Mary tried hard to keep her hands from trembling, but she
never succeeded. So she continued to sit all alone, watching while her family eat together across
the room. Just as she couldn't stop her hands from trembling, she also couldn't stop the tears that
fell from her eyes.
One evening, just before dinner, Emily was sitting on the living room floor, in deep
concentration as she drew something on construction paper. Her father noticed her focused
expression and asked what she was drawing.
"I'm making a pretty house to live in when I'm older," Emily replied with a smile.
"Someday when you're old like Grandma, you can come to live with me in my pretty house. I'll get
you a little table and I'll put it in the corner so you won't bother anyone. Just like Grandma."
Her parents exchanged
