The concept of the mandate of heaven in ancient Chinese government was the belief that the ruling emperor had been chosen by the gods and could only maintain power as long as they ruled justly and effectively. If an emperor failed to do so, it was believed that the mandate would be revoked and a new dynasty could rise to power.
