Is my child able to skip non essential lessons in school if she has an IEP in MA?

In Massachusetts, students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) are entitled to receive a free and appropriate public education (FAPE). The content of the IEP is determined during the Individualized Education Program Team (IEP Team) meeting, which includes parents, teachers, and other relevant professionals.

While IEPs are primarily designed to provide specialized instruction and support for students with disabilities, they don't typically grant the authority to skip non-essential lessons or tasks. The IEP Team, based on the student's needs, determines the appropriate accommodations, modifications, and services required to ensure the student's educational progress.

It is important to consult with the school's IEP Team and discuss your concerns regarding non-essential lessons or tasks. They can assess the situation and determine if any adjustments, accommodations, or modifications can be made to support your child's learning. Remember, the goal of an IEP is to provide necessary support while ensuring the student can meet educational requirements.
