First conflict of the Texas Revolution.

The Battle of Gonzales was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. It occurred in September of 1835 when Mexican troops attempted to retrieve a cannon that had been loaned to the settlers in Gonzales, Texas. Mexico wanted to take back the cannon as tensions grew between Texas settlers and the Mexican government. The settlers, however, refused to give it back and famously created a flag with the phrase "Come and take it" written on it. This defiant act marked the beginning of the resistance movement against Mexico and eventually led to the Texas Revolution.
