“Hey! You’re riding your bike in my zone!” Sheila yelled, pointing to the chalk line she’d drawn.
“This is a free country! Anyone can ride their bike on the sidewalk! It’s public property!” I called back, riding over her line once more. Sheila and I had been neighbors for four weeks now and it had taken about four seconds for us to become enemies. I was eating an ice cream cone when she’d come up to ask for something. Before I knew what was happening, she’d tripped me and my ice cream was on the floor. She claimed it was an “accident,” but she refused to get me a new one. Some neighbor!
She hopped over and traced over the line in thicker chalk giving me a dirty look the whole time. I rolled my eyes. Just then, I heard a pitiful cry coming from the space under her house. I jumped off my bike and started over. Sheila started to protest, but I shushed her with my hand and kept creeping toward the sound. She followed me, trying to remind me it was her house.
“There’s a kitten under here!” I hissed. Her eyes grew round and she crouched down beside the small hole that had formed near her window.
“Let’s save it!” she whispered. I nodded. Without a word, we dashed to my kitchen to get a bowl, some milk, and a piece of string to lure the cat out. We spent the rest of the afternoon playing with our new pet and trying to take care of it.
“I’m really glad we found him,” she whispered, giving me a quick half hug. “And sorry about your ice cream. I’ll get you another one.”
