Judah at the Park
A. Gautam

Aviva’s little brother Judah was always up to some kind of mischief. Their mother liked to say that while babies cry after they are born, Judah laughed. Everyone who knew Judah found it to be true. He made people laugh without meaning to and was confused by their reaction.

One summer evening, Aviva volunteered to take Judah to the neighborhood park. She was bored, and he could burn some energy. The park was only two blocks away, and the temperature had finally dropped to two digits.

“Get ready, we leave in five minutes,” Aviva yelled.

Judah came down wearing flannel pants and a sweatshirt. His hair was sticking up from the friction.

“You will be toasted wearing that!” Aviva exclaimed.

“I won’t get any scratches when I fall,” Judah explained his cushion.

Because the siblings had to return from the park in half hour for dinner, Aviva didn’t protest and took her brother to the park. The park was packed with what seemed like fifty children from the neighborhood. Everyone stopped as if they were frozen when they saw Judah and Aviva. While some little kids gasped or snickered, the big kids went on with their play. That was classic silly Judah.

Aviva stretched her legs all the while watching her silly little brother. Judah was sweating and the drench was visible through the pants and the sweatshirt. Judah didn’t care. Grass, dirt, and who knows what was stuck to Judah’s sticky face, but he didn’t care. Now, toddlers started to gather around Judah and tried to make dirt stick to their faces. A band of children with smeared faces and dirty hair pranced around the park while their caregivers laughed. Judah’s silliness was so refreshing that everyone simply enjoyed him. When Aviva got closer to her brother to take him home, she thought he looked like a squirrel who has run through a mudslide.
