What was the purpose of the Carlisle School?

The purpose of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, also known as the Carlisle School, was to assimilate Native American children into mainstream American society. It was established in 1879 by Captain Richard Henry Pratt with the support of the United States government. The school aimed to replace Native American cultures and traditions with European-American culture by educating Native American children in English, Christianity, and Western skills and trades. The goal was to transform them into productive members of American society and prepare them for assimilation into white American communities.
