Why are incandescent light bulbs considered to be lower efficiency the LED bulbs?

Incandescent light bulbs are considered to be lower efficiency than LED bulbs due to several reasons:

1. Heat loss: Incandescent bulbs generate a lot of heat while producing light. Approximately 90% of the energy used by an incandescent bulb is wasted as heat. This heat loss significantly reduces the efficiency of the bulb since the majority of the energy is not utilized to produce light.

2. Energy conversion: Incandescent bulbs work by passing an electric current through a filament, which then emits light due to the high temperature. However, this process has limitations in converting electrical energy into light energy efficiently. LED bulbs, on the other hand, utilize a completely different mechanism involving semiconductors and electroluminescence, which allows for much higher energy conversion efficiency.

3. Lifespan: Incandescent bulbs have a relatively short lifespan, typically around 1,000 hours. On the contrary, LED bulbs have a significantly longer lifespan, lasting for tens of thousands of hours. The need for frequent replacement of incandescent bulbs results in higher energy consumption and costs over time.

4. Power consumption: LED bulbs consume much less power than incandescent bulbs while producing the same amount of light. For instance, an LED bulb may consume only 10-20% of the power required by an incandescent bulb to produce an equivalent amount of light. This lower power consumption directly translates to higher energy efficiency for LED bulbs.

5. Technological advancements: LED technology has witnessed continuous advancements over the years, resulting in increased efficiency, brightness, and color options. On the other hand, incandescent bulbs have remained relatively unchanged for decades, making them less efficient compared to the newer LED technology.

Due to these factors, LED bulbs offer superior energy efficiency and cost savings over incandescent bulbs, making them the preferred choice for lighting applications.
