Kirra was a wallaby, with a long tail and fur. She looked up and saw three humans watching her intently. The tallest male stepped forward. “G’day, Kirra,” he began. “I am Doctor Martin. This is Doctor Kelly and Mr. Turner.” He gestured to the other human standing behind him. “Do you understand what happened?”

Kirra hesitated. She could understand everything this man was saying, and she felt like she would be able to speak back if she tried. “Yes,” she finally replied, taken aback by how pleasant her voice sounded when speaking human.

Doctor Kelly, the female human, came right up to her. “Do you mind if we do a couple more tests?” she asked. When Kirra shook her head, Doctor Kelly held out a piece of paper. “You might be able to read. Can you tell me what this says?”

Kirra stared at the writing and opened her mouth, but she couldn’t do it. The letters simply made no sense. “I can’t read it,” she admitted at last.

“That’s okay,” Doctor Kelly responded. “Reading is just one of many possible skills. Let’s try geometry instead.” She handed some shapes to Kirra and asked her to push them into a particular pattern. Kirra thought this task was very easy and quickly finished it.

“There you go!” Doctor Kelly exclaimed. “You have very a strong awareness of objects and space. That’s wonderful. Not every animal has the same skills, and that’s perfectly okay. Not every human is the same either. Now why don’t we take a break and get some lunch?”
