The term "Olmec" refers to the ancient Mesoamerican civilization that flourished between 1500 BCE and 400 BCE in what is now southern Mexico. It does not have a direct translation or meaning in the indigenous languages of the region. The Olmec are known for their monumental stone sculptures, including the famous giant heads, and are considered one of the earliest advanced civilizations in the Americas.
