The Norman conquest was led by the invasion of England by the Normans, under the leadership of William the conqueror. After the death of the English King, Edward the confessor created a power vacuum leading to the rival claims to become the new king.

Can somebody add onto this and give it only TWO more details?

1. The main rival claimants for the English throne were Harold Godwinson, the Earl of Wessex, and William, Duke of Normandy. Harold claimed he had been promised the throne by Edward on his deathbed, while William argued that Edward had named him as his heir years earlier.

2. In 1066, Harold Godwinson was crowned as King of England after Edward's death, but William considered his claim to be illegitimate. William assembled a massive fleet and army, crossed the English Channel, and landed in England. The most famous clash between the two rivals occurred at the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066, where Harold was killed, and William emerged victorious, becoming the first Norman king of England.
