The Open Door Policy was a foreign policy initiative proposed by the United States in 1899, aiming to ensure access to Chinese markets for all countries on equal terms and prevent the colonization of China. The graphic above shows various countries wanting to trade with China, as symbolized by their flags trying to enter through the open door.

Although William Howard Taft, who served as the 27th President of the United States from 1909 to 1913, continued to support the Open Door Policy, it did not achieve significant success during his presidency. Taft faced numerous challenges and limitations, such as growing Chinese nationalism, foreign competition, and weakened U.S. influence in the region. These factors hindered his ability to fully open trade with China and achieve the envisioned equal access for all nations. Thus, Taft's efforts fell short of achieving the desired impact of the Open Door Policy during his presidency.
