The Battle of Chickamauga took place from September 18 to 20, 1863, during the American Civil War. It was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater and the second costliest battle of the entire war in terms of total casualties. The Confederate victory at Chickamauga halted the Union Army's advance into the Confederate heartland and allowed the Confederacy to maintain control of Chattanooga, a vital rail hub.
