The University of Georgia was founded by several prominent figures in Georgia's history. These include Abraham Baldwin, who was the first president of the University and also a signer of the United States Constitution; John Milledge, who was Governor of Georgia at the time; Josiah Meigs, who served as the University's first mathematics professor and later became its president; and other early leaders and supporters of education in the state.
