Fungi do not directly receive energy from the sun through photosynthesis, as they lack chlorophyll or any other pigments necessary for photosynthetic energy conversion. Unlike plants and algae, which can harness sunlight directly, fungi obtain their energy from organic matter. They are decomposers that obtain nutrients and energy by breaking down dead plant and animal material, as well as through mutualistic relationships with other organisms.
