introdction to dissertation whose topic is ASSESSMENT OF THE RATE OF ADOPTION OF AGROFORESTRY PRACTICES IN HUYE DISTRICT. A CASE STUDY OF KARAMA SECTOR

Introduction:

Agroforestry is an integrated land-use management system that combines the practices of agriculture and forestry on the same piece of land. This sustainable approach has gained significant attention due to its potential for enhancing environmental sustainability, improving livelihoods, and mitigating climate change impacts. The adoption of agroforestry practices, however, varies across different regions and communities.

This dissertation aims to assess the rate of adoption of agroforestry practices in Huye District, specifically focusing on Karama Sector. Huye District is located in the Southern Province of Rwanda and is characterized by its agricultural activities. Karama Sector, in particular, has a predominantly agricultural-based economy, where farmers heavily rely on subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods.

The primary objective of this research is to determine the current level of adoption of agroforestry practices within Karama Sector. By identifying the various factors that influence the rate of adoption, this study aims to provide insights into the barriers and opportunities for enhancing the adoption of agroforestry practices in this particular region.

Furthermore, this research will utilize a case study approach to gather qualitative and quantitative data from farmers and stakeholders in Karama Sector. By conducting interviews, surveys, and field observations, the study will explore the farmers' perceptions, attitudes, and knowledge regarding agroforestry practices. Additionally, it will assess the availability and accessibility of resources, such as land, tree seedlings, and technical support, that can facilitate the adoption of agroforestry practices.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on agroforestry adoption and provide policymakers, extension workers, and agricultural experts with essential information to develop and implement effective strategies for promoting agroforestry practices in Huye District and similar agricultural landscapes.

Overall, this dissertation seeks to understand the current rate of adoption of agroforestry practices in Karama Sector, Huye District, and identify the key determinants influencing the adoption process. By addressing the gaps in knowledge and providing recommendations, this research will contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural sector in Rwanda and support the country's efforts towards climate change adaptation and mitigation.
