Sand must first undergo compaction and cementation to become sandstone, a sedimentary rock, through a process known as lithification. Subsequently, the sandstone must be subjected to significant heat and pressure over an extended period, leading to physical and chemical changes that transform it into metamorphic rock, such as quartzite, through the process of metamorphism.
