Read the following Roman legend.

Horatius at the Bridge
A long time ago, the king of the ancient country of Etruria attacked the city of Rome. The Etruscan king had a far larger army than Rome did. How could the Romans defend their city?
Rome was on one side of the River Tiber, and the Etruscan army was on the other. The Romans crossed a bridge over the river and fought for hours. Frightened, they finally ran back across the bridge, hoping for safety within their city walls.
Horatius was a young Roman soldier. He knew that if the Etruscans crossed the bridge, they would easily take Rome. He stood on the bridge and faced the Etruscan army alone. "I'll hold them off," he called out to his friends, "while you chop the bridge down!"
His friends thought there was no hope. They didn't believe that one man could fight off an army. But they began sawing the bridge down and then raced for the city gates.
When the Etruscan army tried to cross the bridge, Horatius fought back. As the bridge began to fall, Horatius jumped into the river below. Now that the Etruscans were stopped, Horatius swam back to Rome. Rome was saved, and Horatius was a hero.
